Our Interview with Amanda Campbell of Nourissh

Founder of Nourissh, Amanda Campbell has experienced more than most people do in a lifetime. We caught up with this inspirational woman to find out the role nutrition and the mind-body connection played in her recovery and her mission to provide Australians with convenient, healthy meals.

  1. Tell us a bit about where your health journey began

In 2009 I suffered a major MS attack that left me paralysed and I was given a 50% chance of ever walking again. I spent 2 months in a rehabilitation hospital and eventually learned to walk and even run again with the help of a wonderful team of doctors, neuro-physiotherapists and a kinesiologist.

Having now become an accredited sports kinesiologist myself, I help others rebuild their lives from illness and stress. I founded Nourissh.com in 2014 with the goal of delivering nutritious wholefood meals to people across Australia. Learning about Nutrition and the mind body connection, I strongly believe that by eating the right food and working on our emotional well being we give ourselves the best chance of recovery and live a happy fulfilling life.

  1. What role did food play during your recovery?

Nutrition is absolutely half of the pie and I take a very balanced approach. We know that when you eat better you feel better and when you feel better you’re more likely to make better choices and value yourself. It is from this place that you can connect with yourself again and live a life of higher understanding. For me this led to a transformation, seeing obstacles as opportunities in my life.

  1. You’re a big believer that our minds contribute to our overall health. Tell us a bit more about this and what advice would you give to someone wanting to improve their overall health starting with their mind?

Our ideas that we create about ourselves and the world around us stem from the subconscious part of the brain where our beliefs are developed. Kinesiology helped me understand what my beliefs were that may have led to stress in my body, inflammation and potentially a diseased state. You want your deep beliefs to be aligned with your true conscious desires. So if you want to be successful, you must truly believe that you are. Learning this not only improved my health, but opened opportunities for me in all areas of my life.

  1. What inspires you to keep going at Nourissh?

Having my lunches and dinners being taken care of every day is fabulous!
Our chefs combine ethical, organic and locally sourced ingredients into delicious restaurant quality dishes all done for you. It is my mission to help others understand that transformation is possible, as long as you give your body the right environment to repair and reorganise. Nutrition is your foundation, it keeps me highly motivated.

  1. What’s been the biggest challenge at Nourissh so far?

When we first started, people often said it would be impossible to make organic and locally sourced meals affordable. Our team thinks outside of the box and as we scale up across Australia our costs will also keep improving. Our mission is to provide the most nutrient dense food in delicious meals that suit your beliefs, to maximise brain and gut health.

  1. What’s a normal day like for you?
I get to bed quite early and naturally wake by 7am. Then I have breakfast, exercise, meditate and walk the dogs. Then I am either in meetings at the Nourissh office or speaking at an event. When I am not at Nourissh I am at my kinesiology clinic, Bend Like Bamboo consulting with clients one on one. The evening usually is very low key, dinner in with the pooches or I try and schedule evening catch ups with my friends during the week. Before I head to bed I write in my gratitude journal, and sometimes I also meditate.

  1. What advice would you give to anyone wanting to improve his or her health?
Just start! Start a journal and answer the following questions:
  • What is a small step I can make today?
  • What did I learn today?
  • What is a step I can make tomorrow?
  • Do I feel better mentally?
  • Do I feel better physically?
  • 3 things I am grateful for today
